Paulin-Liston (Yoga Therapeutics)
In 1997 I completed my training as a Physical Therapist, and have been practicing as a state licensed P.T. since then. I have practiced in a variety of settings, most recently at an Out-Patient facility on the North Shore for the past 8 years, where I currently practice. My 200 level yoga teacher's training that I completed 7 years ago has been a natural collaboration with my P.T. practice. Beyond a transformative way of life, yoga is an amazing movement science combining breath and body awareness, in a way that involves the entire person. Throughout my adult life, I have struggled with a "bad back"- one prone to injury. Traditional therapy historically was not a lasting help. A diligent home practice involving my entire body, and not "just my back", has helped to keep me aligned and out of trouble!
One thing that I have learned through my practice as a therapist, is that we can not isolate areas of the body- the entire system is connected and needs to be addressed as such. I have specialized in treatment of foot and ankle disorders, and am in awe of the effect of the lower chain on the entire body. I also have done additional study in the treatment of shoulder, knee, neck, spine, and pelvis. I also have special interest and training working with pre and postpartum women.
Working within the western medical model for years has been an enlightening experience. Even in the therapy realm, insurance providers often manage patient's care, and rarely focus on prevention. I feel that there is a place for intermediary care that is currently being missed, a bridge between traditional therapy and wellness. As a licensed Physical Therapist, I am well suited to be that bridge. I will conduct an initial assessment with you which will give us information regarding your body's current ability and any limitations you may have. Using yoga concepts such as centering, breath work, and personalized physical practice, we can establish a program that will help you to achieve your maximum potential after your traditional physical therapy or insurance has run out. We will focus on total body integration, with extra attention and focus given to areas that you feel, or we find necessary. This is an evolving process, and it takes time and commitment to effect change in your body, but with tapas you will achieve your goals.
Life is a balancing act. Making time to get on the mat every day- if only for a moment- helps to keep me sane. I am a better healer, teacher, mother, spouse and friend because of the life practice of yoga. I would love to share this gift with you.
